This was a game that the entire lacrosse world is still talking about, and will continue to talk about for years to come. The last time the New York Lizards won the MLL Championship title was in 2003. The Rochester Rattlers stole the show during the first quarter as Randy Staats, Mark Matthews, and John Ranagan each managed to get one past Drew Adams, the Lizards star goalie. The Lizards were off to a rocky start, but bounced back with a fury during the second quarter when Greg Gurenlian stole the first face-off and took a running start towards goal. From that point on, goals flooded in from Matt Gibson, Tommy Palesek, JoJo Marasco, and Rob Pannell.
The Rochester Rattlers were not going down without a fight. Jack Near brought the Rattlers back to an 8-7 game at the end of the half. The third quarter was dominated by Greg Gurenlian, Faceoff Athlete of the year presented by the Faceoff Academy, and Mark Matthews for the Rochester Rattlers. Kyle Denoff was able to bring the Rattlers to a three goal lead. However the Lizards would not go away, and a goal from Matt Gibson would tie the game at 11.
Rolling into the fourth and final quarter, Jordan Wolf took the reins and proved he is a weapon on the field, scoring his second goal of the night. Up until the clock showed 11:08 left in the game, Rob Pannell kept the scoreboard turning, scoring multiple goals. A goal from Mike Stone brought the Lizards to a 13-12 lead. Paul Rabil and Tommy Palesek then took turns scoring, ending the game with a three goal victory, 15-12. The team and its supporters celebrated the New York Lizards’ first MLL Championship win in over a decade.
