May Madness Bracket Challenge

May Madness 2016 Bracket Challenge

Welcome back to the second edition of the LACROSSE.COM May Madness Bracket Challenge!

May Madness Bracket Challenge

After what has been one of the most up and down, exciting regular seasons for men’s college lacrosse we are anxious for the post season playoffs to begin. With Notre Dame, Denver, Yale and Brown consistently holding down the top 4 spots, they are favored to make a serious run to Championship weekend. But if this season has proved anything, it is that the traditional lacrosse powerhouses have some serious competition from some non-traditional lacrosse programs such as Richmond, Air Force and Marquette.

We could spend all day trying to predict who will be crowned the 2016 National Champion, so instead we are going to focus on some of the gear that played a role in the success of top ranked teams. In true playoff fashion, we have designed a bracket complete with 8 of the top heads in the game right now, pairing them off for head to head (no pun intended) battles.

Use your personal experience, word of mouth or the information we have listed below to help you make your picks on which heads you think are truly the best of the best. After you vote, share the image of your favorite head from the group of eight on your Instagram or Twitter account and let us know your Championship pick. Do that and use #MayMadnessGiveaway to enter our weekly giveaway of one of the 8 heads in the bracket.

Now enough talk, let’s get to voting!

Nike Lakota vs Brine Clutch IV

Nike Lakota vs Brine Clutch IV

Nike Lakota

Head Spec: Universal or HS

Position Recommendation: Attack/Midfield

Featured Technology: Reinforced lower sidewall

Key Details: The Nike Lakota is not a new head to the market, but over the years it has proven to be one of the most popular among top athletes such as the Thompson brothers for its stiff construction and pinched design. The narrow face shape plus the pointed scoop gives you a tremendous ball control and allows for a natural channel when stringing it up.

Brine Clutch IV

Head Spec: Universal or HS

Position Recommendation: Attack/Midfield

Featured Technology: Vari-Flex Technology

Key Details: The Clutch name holds a legacy in the lacrosse world that not many products do. The Brine Clutch series has been known to be a trustworthy offensive weapon and the latest edition is no different. The Clutch IV now comes packed with Brine’s patented Vari-Flex technology strategically inserted in the throat of the head to provide added stiffness without the extra weight.

STX Duel vs Epoch Hawk Sequel

STX Duel vs Epoch Hawk Sequel

STX Duel

Head Spec: Universal

Position Recommendation: Midfield – Faceoff

Featured Technology: Throat Plug Technology

Key Details: There are a number of heads on the market that are great for faceoffs but none, until now, have been designed and engineered specially for the faceoff. The STX Duel is a leader in its own right and has been seen on countless NCAA fields already this season. Besides the strategic stiff vs flexible zones on the sidewalls, the revolutionary throat plug is shorter than most heads allowing the FOGO to get their hands closer to the ball for more control over the possession.

Epoch Hawk Sequel

Head Spec: Universal

Position Recommendation: Attack/Midfield

Featured Technology: Dual layer architecture

Key Details: Epoch introduced a new style to the game with the laid back profile of the original Hawk. They have since improved upon that design with the Hawk Sequel, cutting out unnecessary materials and using their exclusive dual layer architecture. The composite injected polymer material allows for tremendous durability and improved velocity on your shot, especially when paired with an Epoch Gen. 6 Dragonfly.

Under Armour Command vs StringKing Mark 1

Under Armour Command vs StringKing Mark 1

Under Armour Command

Head Spec: Universal

Position Recommendation: Attack/Midfield/Defense

Featured Technology: All-Weather Nylon construction

Key Details: The start of this year Under Armour introduced a truly versatile head to their collection with the Command. With it they have introduced a whole new material used in the head with an all-weather nylon substance that has proven to withstand the most extreme circumstances from the weather to in-game abuse. The rounded scoop will not only make ground balls much easier but will provide more control no matter what position you play.

StringKing Mark 1

Head Spec: Universal

Position Recommendation: Attack/Midfield/Defense

Featured Technology: Pocket-driven Design

Key Details: The Mark 1 name is very appropriate as it marks the first ever head produced by a mesh company. StringKing has translated their extensive knowledge on stringing pockets in all types of heads and translated that into the Mark 1 making it a very versatile product that can be strung any way you would like. The supremely stiff sidewall design combined with the aggressive scoop and relatively wider face shape make this head great for any position on the field.

Warrior Regulator vs Maverik Centrik

Maverik Centrik vs Warrior Regulator

Warrior Regulator

Head Spec: Universal or HS

Position Recommendation: Midfield/Defense

Featured Technology: LOC-Throat Technology

Key Details: From the ground up, the Warrior Regulator head is engineered for power and stability. The sidewall design somewhat resembles that of the iconic Revolution collection which is proven to be an extremely sturdy head for defensemen at all levels. The stiffness of the Regulator is then amplified as it introduces Warrior’s new LOC-Throat technology. This technology utilizes 4 legs that expand outward as you screw the head into a shaft ultimately locking in the head for a truly unified feel.

Maverik Centrik

Head Spec: Universal or HS

Position Recommendation: Midfield/Defense

Featured Technology: Cored out 3 Strut Sidewall

Key Details: Maverik is known for building products that fit a specific position and playing style, but the Centrik in a sense breaks that mold. This new head is tough enough for a defenseman while light and narrow enough for the offensive player. The very stiff 3 strut sidewall design is cored out to reduce the overall weight of the head making it a great weapon for both ends of the field.
