The 2016 Major League Lacrosse All Star Game took place this past weekend in Fullerton, California at Titan Stadium. The contest would be between team Riptide and team Rolling Thunder. The Riptide were coached by Joe Spallina, the head coach for the New York Lizards; and the Rolling Thunder were led by the Ohio Machine’s head coach, Bear Davis. Both team came out excited and ready to go! The game was back and forth with both teams making runs to either regain the lead or catch back up to the other.
The game started out with the Riptide striking early and were up 3-0 but the Rolling Thunder were able to come back and at the end of the 1st quarter it was all tied up at six. The Rolling Thunder took over for the rest of the half and outscored the Riptide 7-2. Ned Crotty (Rochester Rattlers) was the man in the first half with three goals. He was quickly followed by Will Manny (Boston Cannons) who had two goals and two assists.
The third quarter slowed down for the majority of the period until the end where both teams combined for six goals in the last three minutes. Kieran McArdle from the Florida Launch tallied the last one to put the Rolling Thunder up two heading into the 4th quarter.
Defense stepped up huge in the 4th quarter, especially Scott Rodgers from the Ohio Machine. The man was on fire in the cage! He even had a one-handed save during the final minutes that was just unbelievable. With the help from his defense, Rodgers would take home the MVP trophy for the game! This is the first time ever that a goalie has won the MVP trophy in the MLL All Star Game.
